  TD's Leadership Profile

By the early twentieth century, we began looking beyond national boundaries to serve both the cross-border financial needs of our Canadian-based customers and to satisfy new clients in many international markets.

  • In 1911, The Dominion Bank opened its first international office in London, England and it established a New York agency location in 1919. Today, TD Securities provides a range of niche products and services, in European financial centres, including London, England and Dublin, Ireland, key American cities, and locations across the Asia Pacific region.

  • Within a decade of its amalgamation, TD Bank became involved in major corporate financings and venture capital projects on the international stage and opened a network of U.S. representative offices and developed partnerships with global merchant banks.

  • In 1970, TD became the first Canadian bank to make a substantial investment in commercial banking operations in Hong Kong.

  • By our 125th anniversary in 1980, TD maintained four international divisions: Asia and Australasia; Europe, Middle East and Africa; Latin America and Carribean; and United States.

  • TD listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1986.

  • 1996 marked TD's aggressive leap into international brokerage services with the acquisition of the top-rated Waterhouse Investor Services of New York.

  • In 1998, TD Waterhouse became the world's second largest discount brokerage and we have frequently earned awards for our self-service brokerage offerings, our full-service discretionary advice channel and our institutional services to independent financial advisors in the United States.

  • In 2002, TD Waterhouse UK, the United Kingdom's second largest execution-only broker, announced a joint venture with Royal Bank of Scotland to take a 50% stake in NatWest Stockbrokers. Under this deal, TD Waterhouse provides the operational and settlement platform to NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland customers for execution-only share deals.

  • TD's Global Trade Finance Group, which serves exporting and importing companies through offices in the U.S., Canada, Asia and Mexico, was named Bank of the Year by the Export-Import Bank of the United States for partnering with the Ex-Im Bank to finance exports in 2003.

Today, we are a respected global player in the markets where we compete, particularly in the areas of wholesale banking services delivered by TD Securities to our corporate and institutional clients and wealth management services offered by TD Waterhouse in the U.S. and Europe.

Looking forward we are excited about our strategies to grow on a global stage, especially on our expanding North American platform. Commerce Bancorp and TD Banknorth are a powerful combination with 1,100 branches providing personal and commercial banking, insurance, investment planning and wealth management services. As TD Bank they will continue to grow and to deliver a WOW! customer experience like no other.
