A tradition of service leadership

Throughout our history, we have distinguished ourselves by emphasizing customer service.

In fact, we were founded to meet the essential banking, insurance and commodity exchange needs of grain farmers and merchants who required an institution to help them take advantage of the opportunities offered by their emerging nation. Over time, we've called it different things, but we've always focused on delivering an outstanding customer experience.

  • Supporting customer goals resonated in The Bank of Toronto's 1945 annual report: "By advice when new enterprises are contemplated, by information when new markets are sought, with assistance and guidance in facing problems, we desire our managers to be of the greatest possible help."
  • When The Bank of Toronto and The Dominion Bank amalgamated in 1955, the two institutions became The Toronto-Dominion Bank concentrated on providing excellent customer service. Profiling employees of the day, ads announced that "Helping you is part of his job" and "A big part of her job is to treat you nicely!"
  • In the mid-twentieth century, TD Bank aggressively launched new products and services, such as mutual funds offered through the branch network in 1964 and the VISA credit card (known as Chargex) in 1968, to satisfy consumer demand for greater choice and convenience.
  • In 1975, TD introduced a new "rapid teller" system to accelerate branch service. The next year, Canada Trust (which joined with TD to become TD Canada Trust in 2000) rolled out extended branch hours, boasting "8 to 8, six days straight". Commerce Bank, which joined with TD Banknorth in 2008 to become TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank, began to offer extended branch banking seven days a week, 361 days a year in 1994.
  • Satisfying the insurance needs of customers is one of our key service pillars. In 1997 we led the industry by offering Mortgage Critical Illness Insurance – an innovative solution that meets a need beyond traditional life and accident insurance. Today TD offers personal insurance in Canada through TD Insurance as well as TD Meloche Monnex, one of Canada's top three property and casualty insurers. We also offer personal insurance to our customers in the United States through TD Commerce.
  • TD’s commitment to service excellence was recognized in 2005, 2006 and 2007 when Synovate ranked TD Canada Trust #1 for Best Customer Service among banks in Canada. TD Canada Trust also won the prestigious JD Power and Associates award for highest Customer Satisfaction among banks in Canada in 2006 and 2007. TD AMERITRADE won the JD Power Outstanding Customer Service Experience Award in 2004, 2005 and 2006. In joining TD, Commerce Bank adds to our customer service bench strength as the #1 Bank in America for Customer Satisfaction in the JD Power awards in 2006 and 2007.
  • Our commitment to legendary customer service is a key part of who we are and what matters to us. We will continue to work hard across TD’s diverse businesses to deliver market-leading convenience and service and to provide the financial tools that can help our customers reach their financial goals.

Today, we are ready to continue this tradition of meeting real customer needs. Across TD Bank Financial Group's diverse businesses, we are working hard to develop and deliver financial tools and new services that can help our customers reach their long-term goals.
