TD Canada Trust Homeowner Confidence Poll Western Region Fact Sheet

The first annual TD Canada Trust Homeowner Confidence Poll surveyed adult Canadians from across the country, to explore the impact of the current economy on Canadian’s home and housing decisions.

National highlights:

  • Out of the Canadians who had plans to renovate their homes, the majority of them (53%) are moving forward as planned or doing even more renovations.
  • 92% of homeowners said that the current state of the economy has not required them to consider selling their home.
  • 63% of Canadians surveyed said they feel the current economic situation is a good opportunity to purchase a home.
  • 72% of Canadians surveyed who are thinking of putting their home on the market said they are concerned that the economy will affect their ability to sell in the next year.
  • Canadians were divided when asked if they are taking measures to save more:
    • 37% said they are taking measures to save more,
    • 33% said they are planning to put more towards debt,
    • And, almost one-third (30%) said they are making no changes to their financial strategy.

Western Canada highlights:

  • 54% of Western Canadians who had plans to renovate their homes are moving forward as planned or doing even more renovations.
  • 95% of homeowners in Western Canada said that the current state of the economy has not required them to consider selling their home.
  • 66% of Western Canadians who were polled think that the current economic situation is a good opportunity to purchase a home.
  • When asked if the economy will affect their ability to sell in the next year, 78% of Western Canadians who are thinking of putting their home on the market said they are concerned.
    • When Western Canadians were asked if they are taking measures to save more given the current economic situation:
    • 41% said they are taking measures to save more, making them the most proactive in Canada.
    • 32% said they are planning to put more towards debt.
    • 31% said they are making no changes to their financial strategy.

About the TD Canada Trust Homeowner Confidence Poll:

  • The survey was conducted by Angus Reid Strategies on January 6, 2009 with English and French speaking Canadians aged 18+, using the Angus Reid Daily National Omnibus.
  • The sample size included 1,003 men and women.
