    Advancing children’s literacy is a top priority for TD.

    Reading skills and success in life are clearly linked, which is why we believe developing a love of reading in kids is an investment that lasts a lifetime.

    We fund a variety of summer reading programs in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K.

    In Canada, we sponsor the TD Summer Reading Club for kids.

    Now in its 15th year, the program helps to keep young minds stay active during the summer holidays with a reading kit, posters, games and storytelling sessions at local libraries.

    Last year, over half-a-million kids and 2,000+ public libraries joined in.

    In 2010, TD provided 575,000 copies of Caramba, written and illustrated by Marie-Louise Gay, as part of the TD Grade One Book Giveaway, the largest free book distribution of its kind in Canada.

    "The sole act of putting a book in the hand of every Grade One child really does make a difference in supporting children’s literacy,” said Charlotte Teeple, Executive Director, Canadian Children’s Book Centre.

    The TD Canadian Children’s Literature Awards highlight the important role authors and illustrators play in childhood development and in creating a joy of reading.

    Our 2010 winners were The Hunchback Assignments by Arthur Slade and Le géranium, written by Mélanie Tellier and illustrated by Melinda Josie.

    In the U.S., the TD Bank Summer Reading Program encourages children to read, while also teaching the value of saving money.

    Every child who reads 10 books over the summer receives US$10 in a savings account. In 2010, nearly 32,000 children participated with TD Bank awarding young readers $318,000.

    In the U.K., the Right to Read program gives kids in low-income areas opportunities to read with volunteers.

    TD employees are given paid-time off to spend an hour reading with children, helping improve their literacy skills and building their confidence.
