Projects Funded Within Newfoundland and Labrador
With the help of FEF funding, this initiate is helping reduce green house gas emissions from unnecessary municipal mowing operations. Under utilized open spaces are converted back into a natural habitat by discontinuing mowing practices. Public education about green house gas is also an important objective of this initiative. FEF is helping provide "Project Webfoot" (previously known as Adopt-A-Class) a wetland conservation program designed to meet grade 4 learning objectives in the "Habitats" unit of the Science Curriculum in Atlantic Canada. Topsail Elementary School is located behind an area of about 250 metres of mature spruce forest. The students and teachers will build a nature trail through the forested area to make it accessible and educational. Having the natural forest accessible to the students on a daily basis will increase their awareness and appreciation of the natural environment and the importance of preservation on natural habitats will be very valuable in shaping conservation values. The project will also benefit the entire community. The project is linked to all areas of the school curriculum. Funds will cover the material costs. The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation supported two environmental workshops. The Green Community Association hosted the workshops addressing issues such as water quality and energy usage. The first workshop outlined ways to reduce household energy usage and the second workshop addressed the issue of safe drinking water and what is being done to improve water protection. The workshops also addressed other environmental concerns such as pollution, waste and greenhouse gas emissions. The goal of these workshops was to raise awareness of the environment and what we need to do in order to protect our natural environment. Funds were used to cover the costs of the workshops. The Foundation supported a schoolyard naturalization project. Teachers and students planted native trees and shrubs along the school grounds. The project will increase the students' awareness and appreciation for the natural environment. This area will also be used as an outdoor classroom where students can learn hands-on about insects, plants, etc. The project is linked to the school curriculum. Funds were used to cover the costs of the trees and shrubs. The primary purpose of this project is to continue the beach/shoreline cleanup initiative, specifically the cleanup of 50 coastal community beaches/shorelines in Newfoundland and Labrador. The project will increase community awareness and appreciation for the natural environment. Funds covered the cost of garbage bags, gloves and recycling bins. Lower Trinity South Development Association The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation supported the clean up and interpretive signage installation from Hearts Content to Lead Cove. The sign will highlight the different species in the area. The project will increase community awareness as community members will help with the cleanup and installation of the interpretive sign. Funds covered the cost of the garbage bags, recycling bins, signage and gloves. |
