Projects Funded Within Prince Edward Island
West Royalty Elementary Home and School Association FEF funding is helping naturalize newly acquired 11 acres of land adjacent to the school destined for both school and community use. The land will be naturalized into an Acadian forest, with native species of trees and shrubs. Environmental Coalition of Prince Edward Island FEF funding will help carry out restoration and wildlife enhancement with the help of a coalition crew and volunteers from the community. On each property, the applicant is helping improve the quality of the woodlands while adding rare species of trees, shrubs and wildflowers. Winter River Environmental Committee The first objective of the project is to provide 6 youth participants with 23 weeks of practical work experience through environmental activities. Secondly, to design and deliver a community awareness program for the watershed environment, to develop a trail system in the watershed, to plant 1500 tree-stock, to perform stream restoration, to construct bird-nesting boxes and to maintain the community park land in the watershed. The project took place at Winter Rivershed. The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation covered partial costs of the materials required to run the program. Gordon's Pond Environmental Enhancement Group The Gordon Pond enhancement group plans to produce a newsletter to feature stories about work completed in the watershed, provide information on a variety of environmental topics, as a took to get information out to the public, particularly landowners who may be interested in enhancing properties for wildlife. The newsletter will highlight fish enhancement management, environmentally friendly pest reduction tips, etc. The newsletter will be distributed to residents of the Huntley River Watershed. The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation covered the cost of print the newsletters. Friends of Covehead & Brackley Bay The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation provided funding for the planting of 300 native trees and shrubs to increase species diversity in a 5-10 acre section of the Trout River natural area. The project will increase awareness of the environment in the entire community. West River Environmental Committee TD Friends of the Environment Foundation supported a reforestation of the West River Riparian zone with native trees species to reduce erosion, re-establishment of wildlife habitat, water regime temperature control, and overall re-establishment of greenbelts along west river watershed. Local residents will help with the planting. The project will increase the communities awareness and appreciation for the natural environment. Funds will be used to cover the cost of trees. Tryon River Watershed Cooperative Several areas of the Tryon river need to be excavated with hymac to reduce silt in the Tryon river. The excavation will take place at Abiteau Bridge. This is an important issue as the community is largely settled along the river. The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation's funds were used to cover the costs of the hymac. Community residence will help with the excavation. The project will increase the local communities awareness and appreciation of the natural environment. |
