Despite a scammer's best efforts, these simple steps can stand in their way – and preserve the security of the information you store and access online.

If you are providing financial information or placing an order online, be sure the site is secure. Look for a URL that begins with "https://" and a "closed padlock" or green indicator in the address bar of your browser

Watch out for copycat sites that may try to look like a financial institution. Be sure you are using the correct web address for your bank

Third-party fintech apps often store and access your bank account information to help you manage your money, invest, borrow and send money. Learn how to more safely use these apps

Download apps from reputable sources only – such as iTunes® App Store, Amazon Appstore for AndroidTM or Google PlayTM store

Never leave your device unattended – and always log off when you are finished

Don't open e-mail or attachments from senders you don't know

Never respond to unsolicited e-mail or click a link within a suspicious e-mail or text message

Use secure messaging when it's available. Our online and mobile services have a secure messaging feature which requires you to log in. Once logged in, messages sent within our system are secure

Carefully review the transactions on your statement every month
