Family, Finances and Staying Present

Published:11/02/2021

As an unprecedented year fades further and further into the background, many of us find ourselves scrambling to herd our resolutions for 2021. It's safe to say that we've all learned to pivot. We've humbly celebrated our birthdays, pushed back our ceremonies. We've pulled our children out of classrooms and turned the least chaotic corners of our homes into workspaces. Change came fast and heavy, but we persevered, and continue to do so. Together.

On February 15th, we welcome Family Day. Family Day hails from Alberta where Helen Hunley, then Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, passed the Family Day Act in 1990. From then on, the third Monday of every February became known as Alberta Family Day. In the decades since, a number of provinces have joined Alberta in observing Family Day, including Ontario, New Brunswick, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Although it isn't a national holiday, and excludes pockets of the workforce, several Canadians take the opportunity to shut-off and spend time with their loved ones.

What do you think about when you think about family? Family is a hot topic and a point of concern for people the world over. How do we keep our families safe? How do we keep our families healthy? How do we stay connected to our families? There are infinitely more questions than answers, but we keep working at it. We find new ways to bond; new ways to ask how others are feeling. Maybe we eat more meals at the table. Maybe we spend an extra hour on the phone. This February 15th, we encourage you to put a little extra focus on family.

In March, a major deadline looms over our heads, and it can make all the difference in our personal finances. March 1st, 2021, is the last day we can contribute to our RRSPs and lower our taxes for the previous year.

At TD Asset Management Inc. (TDAM), we believe in planning ahead with ease. And we provide every resource to help you do just that. From one guide that brings you the latest updates, RRSP Contribution Deadline: What You Should Know, to another guide that gives you the complete breakdown, What is an RRSP?, we have you covered and well ahead of the game. The goal? Keep more of your hard-earned money and spend this Family Day in the present.

Happy Family Day from TDAM!
