#EmbraceEquity

Published:07/03/2023

International Women's Day (IWD) is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. Marked annually on March 8th, IWD is one of the most important days of the year to:

  • Celebrate women's achievements
  • Raise awareness about women's equality
  • Lobby for accelerated gender parity
  • Fundraise for female-focused charities

This year, the IWD 2023 theme is: #EmbraceEquity

#EmbraceEquity

Imagine a gender equal world

  • A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination
  • A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive
  • A world where difference is valued and celebrated

Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #EmbraceEquity. The aim of the IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme is to get the world talking about why equal opportunities aren't enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.

Progress has been made – but there is still a long way to go
While women have made monumental strides toward equality, particularly in the past decade, there is still a long way to go. Part of the mission is to understand that equity is a requirement and not just a perk. Understanding the difference between equality and equity is paramount to fostering true inclusion and belonging.

  • What is equality?: Equality means that people are given the same resources or opportunities.
  • What is equity?: Equity means acknowledging that everyone has different circumstances, and prioritizes equal outcomes over equal resources. It means allocating the right resources and opportunities so everyone has access to the same outcome.
    • For example, consider this popular analogy: if two people are trying to look over a wall to watch a ball game, giving them the same size box to stand on, is equality. They have the same resources, but what happens if one person still can't see?
    • Giving the other person a taller box so they can have the same view as their friend, is equity. By adjusting the resources, they can now have equal experiences.
  • So what does #EmbraceEquity mean for IWD?: The focus on equity for this year's IWD theme is intended to spark thought and discussion around how different factors including race, sexuality, gender, socioeconomic status and more can significantly impact access to opportunities. By embracing our differences and supporting each other so we all have the same view of the ball game, we can help forge harmony and unity, and drive success for all.
