Additional coverage recommendations

Sewer backup coverage

Since you have belongings at the basement level, this coverage is particularly important for you. Sewer backup is a common claim that can result in high repair bills.

This coverage protects you against sudden and accidental water damage caused by a sump pump failure, or by septic and sewer backup.

What else does it cover?

  • Coverage for discharge, backup, or overflow of septic tanks, drain fields or other waste water systems
  • Helps provide emergency response cleanup services
  • Helps cover living expenses while your home is being cleaned

Common examples

  • The plumbing pipeline that takes all waste from your home becomes blocked. The raw sewage comes right back in through your basement drain, toilet or tub, causing significant damage.
  • You are at work during a heavy rainfall. The power goes out in your home, causing your sump pump to shut down. Water then enters your basement and permanently damages your flooring and baseboards.

Roof water damage coverage

Based on your responses, you should consider protection for sudden and accidental water damage caused by ice damming (ice that forms at the edge of the roof from melting and refreezing) or by the weight of ice and snow accumulating on your roof.

What else does it cover?

  • Repair or replacement of damaged property
  • Provides additional living expenses if you must move out during repairs

Common examples

  • Snow piled up on your roof begins to melt. Your eaves trough is blocked with ice so the water cannot drain freely into the downspout. The water enters your home, through your roof, causing damage to your insulation, ceiling, and interior walls.
  • Heavy snowfalls all winter cause ice and snow to pile up. The weight causes your roof to suddenly collapse. Water enters your home, damaging the structure and your floors so you cannot live in your home.

Above ground water damage coverage

Given our Northern climate, protection for sudden and accidental water damage caused by rain or snow that enters or seeps through your walls or roof including any doors, windows or other similar openings within them can be important. This protection also covers ice damming (ice that forms at the edge of the roof from melting and refreezing) or by the weight of ice and snow accumulating on your roof.

What else does it cover?

  • Water entry due to backup of eavestroughs and downspouts
  • Provides additional living expenses if you must move out during repairs

Ground and surface water damage coverage

Based on your responses, you should consider coverage for sudden and accidental entrance or seepage of surface or ground water through basement walls or floors, foundations, doors, windows or other openings within them. For instance, with the arrival of Spring, water from the melting snow can seep through your home’s foundation and cause significant damages.

What else does it cover?

  • Coverage to help replace or repair your home and belongings
  • Provides additional living expenses if you can't live in your home
  • Provides Protects your belongings and structure

Earthquake damage coverage

Since you live in ... (dynamic)

What else does it cover?

  • Coverage for belongings you take with you if you need to evacuate your home due to an earthquake
  • Helps cover the cost of home repairs or reconstruction
  • Provides coverage toward replacement of damaged personal property
  • Coverage towards additional living expenses while your home is being repaired or rebuilt

Oil damage coverage

A leak from your oil tank can cause serious damage to your home and/or property and poses a risk of fire and environmental contamination. Additional protection can be added to your base policy.

What else does it cover?

  • Cleanup and decontamination costs
  • Replacement of damaged exterior plants and greenery
  • Personal liability coverage for damage due to oil such as legal costs if your neighbour's property is impacted

Identity theft coverage

Every year in Canada, thousands of people fall victim to identity theft. It can cost a lot in legal and resolution fees plus time off work to restore your credit and reputation to its pre-theft state. Coverage is available for expert assistance to restore your credit and reputation to its pre-theft state.

What else does it cover?

  • Coverage for expenses such as legal fees, long distance calls, registered mail
  • Coverage toward loss of income
  • No deductible to pay in the event of an identity theft claim

Additional personal liability coverage

Since you have a pet, pool, boat and occasional help and travel outside of Canada, you should consider increasing your personal liability coverage above the standard amount.

This coverage helps protect you and your family financially against accidental damage or injuries where you can be held liable, whether it occurs on your property or while you are travelling.

Common examples

  • You can be held liable if your pet bites and injures someone. For example, while walking your usually playful dog, he accidentally gets off his leash and severely bites the hand of a professional violinist. They sue you for medical expenses and loss of revenue.
  • You can be liable for injuries to others while on your property, such as your sitter or housekeeper. For example, your housekeeper slips on your stairs, severely injures their back and decides to sue you resulting in a judgment against you for an amount greater than your base coverage.
  • The risk of an accident is higher for pool owners and boat owners since you can be held liable for injuries to others when they are on your boat or swimming in you pool. For example, you throw a BBQ and a friend accidently falls in your pool resulting in a severe head and spinal cord injury. They sue you for damages.
  • You can be liable for damage or injuries to others while away from home. For example, you are playing golf in Florida and your club or ball accidentally strikes another player in the head. They decide to sue resulting in a judgment against you for medical expenses and loss of revenue.
