Opportunity starts with access

A job can change a life. A home can anchor a family. A small business can transform a community. That’s why we focus our community giving on helping more people access meaningful work, stable housing, and opportunities to establish and grow small businesses. Because when we show up for each other, we’re More human.

Am I eligible?

Not-for-profit organizations play a critical role in creating opportunity and helping communities thrive. They are often closest to the challenges and solutions that can shape the course of a life. And we're proud to work with thousands of them, supporting initiatives that deliver measurable outcomes for communities.

If you're a not-for-profit organization creating opportunities in one of our focus areas: Jobs and workforce development, Housing affordability, Entrepreneurship and small business support, you may be eligible for funding.

Check out the How TD Supports Communities tab and read the questions and answers below for more information on our process.

TD’s community giving focus areas

We fund community-led, not-for-profit initiatives that help people access jobs, stable housing, and support to start or grow a small business. These three focus areas reflect our belief that opportunity is the foundation of financial strength.

We're focused on these three areas because we know that a job can change a life, a home can anchor a family, and a small business can transform a community. Access to opportunity through employment, housing, and entrepreneurship can have a meaningful impact on people's financial strength and long-term well-being. By helping create opportunities in these areas, we can support stronger and more resilient communities.

We are focused on initiatives that help people access jobs, stable housing, and opportunities to start or grow a small business.

In addition to these three areas, we support communities in the following ways through long-standing programs and collaborations that support vibrant community life, protect shared spaces, and bring people together:

  • Supporting environmental initiatives and public green spaces through the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF).
  • Contributing to a vibrant music scene in Canada through TD Music community giving.
  • Facilitating accessible art experiences through the TD Art Collection and related initiatives.
  • Helping colleagues to make a difference through initiatives like TD Skills for Impact, TD Tree Days, our Employee Giving Campaign, and Non-Profit Leadership Board Program.

Please note that applications submitted through this platform will only be considered for initiatives that align with the three focus areas in the response to the question " What does TD fund?". Some of the programs listed above have different application processes or eligibility requirements, while others do not accept applications for funding. Please visit the relevant program website for more information.

We recognize that community initiatives don't always fit into a single category. If your initiative helps create access to opportunities related to jobs, housing, or small business support, it may align with our focus areas. We encourage you to review the examples provided on this site and submit an application if you believe there is a strong connection.

In most cases with federated organizations, we prefer applications to be submitted through a national office. However, regional chapters may be considered where there is a clear rationale for applying separately.

TD provides substantial support to United Way chapters across Canada. For this reason, we will give preference to organizations that have not received funding from United Way and other TD funded foundations and organizations

Yes. Organizations may apply again in future funding cycles. We encourage applicants to review their initiative against our focus areas, eligibility criteria, and application guidance before reapplying. Please note that organizations are normally considered for funding once per year through a competitive review process, and funding is never guaranteed.

Application process

When preparing to submit a funding application, please gather the following information:

  • Your organization's contact information including the address, phone number, email address, and Charitable Registration Number or Incorporation Number, and your organization's mandate.
  • A description of the initiative for which you are requesting funding.
  • A description of the intended outcomes of your initiative and how you plan to measure and track progress towards these intended outcomes.
  • A list of the members of your organization's Board of Directors and/or any Advisory Board members.
  • A description of how the leadership for your initiative will reflect the diversity of the community/group that your initiative intends to serve.
  • The amount of funding for your initiative that you are requesting from TD.
  • A list of current funders for your organization and for your initiative.
  • An overall budget for your organization and for your initiative (plus audited financial statements for requests over $100,000).
  • How you propose to use the funding you are requesting from TD for your initiative and what type of recognition of the Bank you would consider providing for such support.

We receive a range of requests from under $1,000 to over $1,000,000. Applications will be reviewed based on the scope of the initiative, including intended impacts to the community and the ability to measure and track progress. The amount requested will be assessed based on budgets, and other information provided in the application. Due to the volume of applications received, funding decisions are made through a competitive review process.

When applying, please consider that:

  • Funding from TD should not make up more than 20% of your organization's total operating budget.
  • No more than 20% of funding from TD can be used to cover capital expenses directly related to the initiative TD is supporting.
  • No more than 10% of funding from TD can be used to cover the costs associated with evaluating the progress and outcomes of the initiative.
  • TD will only consider and fund one request per organization. Organizations with multiple faculties, like hospitals and post-secondary institutions, must determine which program they'd like to prioritize and put forward on behalf of the organization. If you are applying as a faculty or department, you must ensure you have your organization's endorsement. We encourage organizations to centralize their requests through the fundraising arm of their institution should they have one.
  • TD will not direct any portion of a grant to unrestricted or undesignated funds.
  • TD will not fund endowments.
  • For a single organization, the maximum donation from TD is typically capped at $500,000 per year, for a maximum of three years.
  • Audited financial statements will be required for requests over $100,000.

We have four deadlines each year. Please refer to the timelines below to plan your application accordingly. While the portal remains open throughout the year, applications will only be reviewed during the timelines noted below. If you miss a deadline, your application will be automatically pushed to the following round so you don't need to reapply.
