What is a commission and what does “free trades” really mean?
A commission is a charge for buying or selling stocks or ETFs. TD Easy Trade gives you 100 free trades a year, every year, in all Canadian and U.S. stocks and ETFs, including partial shares, with no commission.
Here’s what that looks like for your first 100 trades and after:
|
First 100 stock and ETF trades, including partial shares, per year |
After the first 100 stocks, ETF, and partial share trades per year |
|---|---|
|
Canadian and U.S. stocks |
Partial shares (less than 1 share) |
|
Free |
C$9.99 per trade $1.99 per trade |
Your free trades are per person, not per account. If you have multiple accounts, you’ll get 100 free trades across all your accounts, not for each one .
In addition, with TD Easy Trade there are:
- No account fees on Canadian or U.S. accounts
- No minimum balance requirements
Trade in U.S. dollars – TD Easy Trade gives you a free U.S. account
When you open a Canadian account in TD Easy Trade, you also automatically get a free U.S. account. You can use it to hold U.S. currency and trade U.S. investments (like stocks).
The first time you move Canadian dollars into your U.S. account, you have to convert them to U.S. dollars. Every time you change currencies, how much you get is based on a competitive exchange rate plus a small fee - so the free U.S. account means you can keep your U.S. dollars. Once you have U.S. dollars, there are no currency conversion costs when the currency of trade and the currency of the account are the same. For example, there is no currency fee to buy a U.S. stock from your U.S. account.
You can also keep U.S. dollars in your U.S. dollar account and Canadian dollars in your Canadian dollar account without additional fees.
Is my money protected when I use TD Easy Trade?
Yes! Canadian investors who use online brokerage firms apps like TD Easy Trade are protected in ways.
1. CIRO, the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization
CIRO oversees all investment dealers, mutual fund dealers, and trading activity. Its mission is to regulate fairly and effectively so investors are protected.
● All online brokerages (including TD Easy Trade) must be members of – and regulated by – CIRO
● CIRO enforces rules related to business conduct, financial practices, and integrity
In particular, the activities of investment dealers like TD Easy Trade are governed by CIRO’s Investment Dealer and Partially Consolidated Rules.
2. The Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF)
If a CIRO member firm goes bankrupt, the CIPF provides limited protection for investors. That means if you have an eligible account with a member firm (like TD Easy Trade) and that firm goes bankrupt, CIPF will work to ensure that property (securities and cash) held for you by the firm is given back to you.
What in-app account security features does TD Easy Trade have?
TD Easy Trade uses biometrics (like your face or fingerprint) to prove you’re authorized to access your account. It also uses two-factor authentication where, from time to time, we’ll ask for a one-time code we’ll text to you.
