How do TD Easy Trade’s fees compare with other self-directed online
brokerages?
With TD Easy Trade or any other self-directed online investing brokerage, it’s important to choose the platform and pricing that suits your investing style and will help you meet your goals. Each self-directed online investing platform has its own pricing structure. For example, some require you to keep a minimum amount in your account and charge you if you fall below that amount. Others don’t. Some platforms offer a certain number of free trades per year, or have flat fees, lower-per share fees for active, high-volume traders, or a tiered structure.
TD Easy Trade offers straightforward pricing, with 100 free trades a year, each year, and fees for full and partial shares once you’ve gone beyond 100 free trades. There are no special fees for active traders and no tiered structure. There are no admin fees, such as account fees on Canadian or U.S. accounts, , and no account minimums or fees when account balances fall below a certain amount.
No need for a U.S. account to buy U.S. stocks
You can have accounts in TD Easy Trade in Canadian and U.S. dollars and trade Canadian and U.S. stocks and ETFs. When you open a Canadian account, you also automatically get a free U.S. account that you can use to hold U.S. currency and trade without worrying about exchange fees. There will be a first-time exchange fee from Canadian currency when you put money in your U.S. dollar account. After that, there are no exchange fees when the currency of your trade and the currency of the account are the same. For example, there is no fee to buy a U.S. stock from your U.S. account.
If you move money from one currency to another (e.g., Canadian to U.S. dollars) including buying a U.S. dollar stock with Canadian dollars, there is an exchange fee.
Some other self-directed online brokerages charge you a currency conversion fee when you trade US stocks in your Canadian account (unless you pay for a U.S. account). That can get expensive if you trade U.S. stocks frequently.
