Becca just randomly texted me one night and was just like, why do I want to start a candle company?
And then before we knew it, we were actually here.
Alben Lane Candle Co take two.
We were literally on the car ride here and we opened up our TikTok and a local influencer in Halifax had shared her unboxing of one of our candles to her followers, and we didn't know that was going to happen.
And then everyone in the comments was like, "oh, I love their candles," or "I'm wearing
this perfume now."
Something that we really value just in our brand, in our community, is that personability and that connection that we formed with our customers, our stores, and something that we found, TD really has is that personability and that connection.
No problem is too small. They're constantly reaching out, checking in. They never make us feel insignificant or small for the problems that we have. It's just they get to know us and know us as a brand, know our business, know us as people. And that is so important to us. And it's been so refreshing.
Shout out Darren, we love you.
You have to wear so many hats when you're a small business owner, and finance is not one of our favourite hats to wear. And so we have so many questions.
And TD has been so responsive and so understanding and just so supportive
from the first meeting with our TD Small Business Manager that we knew it was going to be the right fit for us.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they are stupid. Your account manager has either heard them a million times before and is able to help you answer them, or they can just take some of that stressful load off of you.
There's no harm in asking for help, and I think TD really helped us kind of get over that.

Now we're so lucky enough to have a business that celebrates our two loves, a good snack and a good drink.
Oh, I just got it, it literally pops in your mouth.
We're a husband and wife duo based in Toronto. This industry in particular, food, is dominated by a lot of the big players in the space. So a company like ours, we really try to take those values at heart in everything that we create.
All of our raw ingredients are locally sourced whenever possible. We're proud to be certified plastic neutral, which means that for every bag you purchase, we remove one from our environment. So when you do that, you know you help both the economy and our ecosystem, especially helping local.
You just have to be very adaptable. Vince and I, were looking for our very first production space. TD actually came in at a really crucial moment within our business.
I think they've been very proactive about reaching out to their customers. And there is that sense that they are there in your corner, like supporting you.
But, you know, for small business owners with like the pandemic, and now with some tariffs and stuff and I, the small business advisors that we connect with help us to understand all of that.
I think just ask a lot of questions. So I think that says a lot in the past six years. Like we're still with them.
For sure, just start. Like, there's never a good time.

The biggest challenges would be staffing was up there, finding the right kind of people that are hospitality minded.
Financing was tricky until we met TD.

We got a puppy this year.
We had to get matching dog outfits.
We have a dog harness and accessories that match the button up shirt, Yeah, because we're those kind of crazy dog moms.

So I'm Sarah. I co-founded Rainbow Certified with my wife, Rachel.
We do this together doing LGBTQ apparel and accessories.
We started drawing, Sarah designs everything you see on her iPad.
Just have fun doing it and see what you can create.
It is crazy how two girls with like a small idea within a couple of years have been able to reach so many people worldwide.
We do a lot within our community, especially for Wally Pride, which is where we live in.
That's like our neighborhood and we have like a local pride there as well, whether it's like designing pins or stickers or donating those kind of things to them, like we're always there to help.
Someone like TD is very present with diversity and inclusion.
Even when you walk into like a local branch, the media that's on the TV is like very seamlessly incorporates queer families, queer people, without just being for June for a campaign.
Yeah.
And if we have any questions, we know we can just pick up the phone or call into our local branch and they will be there to help us.
Any questions is not a silly question when it comes to finances and banking.
Our advisors know us by name, they know what our business is.
They love our dog. They give her treats.

It's hard to do when you're nervous.
Oh! It’s perfect.
So, Gemlet is something I founded ten years ago, and we're best known for our permanent jewelry which is a custom fit bracelet that's welded on your wrist.
And I was looking for something that is waterproof, so hence I found the material gold filled.
We have this, charm bar where you can pick different charms to add to your necklaces, your bracelets and something that I can just live in and not think about taking off over time.
It really means a lot when you ask a small business, like how the product is made, what their story is, because it's more about the experience.
People remember actually getting the jewelry and taking a piece of it with them and having it forever.
We really like to be part of events and fundraisers.
One being last year for the holidays, we did a fundraiser for SickKids.
We also like to collaborate with local small businesses, kind of cross-promote our products and just kind of strengthen our whole like local small business community.
I've always been banking with TD, and I had a really good experience on my personal banking side of things.
As my business was growing, I realized that having just a personal account was not enough.
So I reached out to get a business account. As soon as I started asking questions, what I really wanted, then they were able to help me make a plan to better achieve my goals.
And having a better budget plan has been really helpful, and I think TD helped me how to better prepare my business and their finances.
Selling it on Etsy, when I think back to that time, I didn't think that I would be able
to have 6 or 7 stores right now.

You know, it's nice being your own boss.
Nice having no ceiling when it comes to your ideas and the things you can do.
So, my name is Joanna, Nurse Jo.
I've been a nurse for 17 years.
I got really inspired over the last seven years to sort of transition into working in skin and skin care.
There's not a lot of practitioners, of colour that do provide services for all skin tones.
So I decided to sort of transition into the field of aesthetics and open up The Face Lab.
We do consultations, skincare, facials.
But the world of aesthetics is not just about looking perfect.
It's also about feeling confident in your skin.
Whenever we do events, we also donate services and do raffle prizes to raise money for local shelters and food banks in the community.
That's really important to me because I worked in mental health nursing and worked with the homeless population.
So I feel like it's something that even though I've moved on to more of a small business, there's different ways I can give back.
We're actually moving into a beautiful new space.
It's like identifying all of those sorts of opportunities for us to continue to grow and have the support with TD, whether it's like different products or loans and things like that.
So take advantage of all of the resources TD has to offer and really talk to your Account Manager and explain to them all aspects of your business and where you wanted to go.
Ask questions.
Find your community, find your people, the people that support you, and sort of really tap
in and identify your strengths, but also maybe some of your weaknesses that you kind of need to lean on others to sort of support and help you grow.

I was always an avid home cook growing up.
Barbecue is not just my hobby, it's my livelihood and it's my passion.
I started doing barbecue competitions and realized there was a need for my own flavours of spice rubs and barbecue sauce.
My wife and I realized that we had a small business opportunity at hand, had a lot of fun doing it and turned it into a small business.
In a city as small as Regina, has a very strong entrepreneurial spirit. I think that's really developed, especially in the last ten years.
Being farm country people like myself, we were raised knowing that you had to get stuff done on your own, there weren't always the tools and companies available to assist you for things.
TD’s support especially, I think, running a small business any entrepreneur has a number of fires to put out and sources of stress coming in from every different direction.
I'm grateful for a great relationship with TD.
They've helped me out of a couple of different jams over the years.
We're in the business of barbecue.
We sell the most food on our food truck in the summer, so as a seasonal business, our
bank account always looked great in September and October, but pull money out of the business to support our family, and we invest in new projects in the spring.
And we always had a cash crunch in the spring.
And it was something I brought up with our TD advisor and came up with that a line of credit solution that really helped us out, and we were really dependent
on for a number of years, so.

The moment I knew I had something real,
I remember I was sitting in my tiny, tiny, 400-square-foot apartment, scrunchies surrounding me, and I didn't even make them all yet and I launched the website, and they all sold out that day.
The biggest and hardest step is just starting your business.
My name is Tina, and I'm the founder of XXL Scrunchie.
Five years ago, I cut up one of my mom's old shirts and I made it into a scrunchie as a Christmas gift for my cousin,but with one difference:
I made it extra, extra large because she has super long hair.
I was a mural artist, and I did kind of like fine-line work,so that really inspired me and my branding.
And with the fabrics, I love all the colours you can choose.
One way recently that my business gives back is with a local organization called Reaching for Rainbows.
They're an after-school program that gives back to vulnerable girls and gives them a safe space to come after school, develop friendships, and a sense of belonging.
I partnered with them with an exclusive scrunchie collection but not only that, I wanted to make sure we could financially donate, so 25% of those sales went directly to them.
So, as an entrepreneur, what made you choose TD?
I feel like TD actually chose me because my parents had restaurants, and they were entrepreneurs themselves.
Growing up, they always banked with TD.
I've been banking with them since I had like $0 in my bank account and making the switch felt kind of natural for my business.
I already built all this trust, I knew where to go and who to chat with.
Success is just staying true to myself, and with TD, it just means having that
financial stability and support on the back so I can focus on being creative and doing new launches and picking new claw clips.

I never expected that in our business where you can buy the same product at the same price, that people would build such an emotional connection to our store, that they're willing to drive hours to shop there.
People are looking for authenticity.
Our business is a 35 year old family business that my dad started, and it's been very successful over the years, and my brother and I had both left the business and pursued other careers.
And then eventually we decided to come back and help my dad retire and completely rejuvenated and changed our business.
You can come up with a great idea, you can identify a great product, but you need to go out and make sure who else is selling it.
What type of consumer buys it, and what's your plan to reach those consumers?
I've always loved my hometown of Smiths Falls.
We have a beautiful little town.
It's got a great population when it comes to different ages and different industries.
We're in our second generation now.
Our name has become synonymous with appliances and even mattresses, and you become a multi-generational source.
We've sold to the grandparents, we've sold to the parents, and now we're selling
to the children.
Success, to me, is continuing the growth of our business, establishing more trust
and more recognition in our brand.
We've been with TD, I believe, since our store opened. Their online portal is great.
If we ever need assistance or service, everything's very easy.
And it's just one of those things that I don't think about a lot because it just works.
We've done something special that we communicated in a very unique and authentic way to our audience, and it's led to opportunities like this to share our story.
And it's been the most incredible, fulfilling experience that I can imagine.

I have candles that are inspired by different cities in Pakistan and cities in Canada.
And my thought was I want something that felt timeless.
The authenticity of my brand is what helps me stand out.
So I'm Rohma, I'm the founder of Aurie Luxe, which is a luxury home fragrance brand.
I wanted to merge two parts of who I am, so I am a proud Pakistani, now a Canadian.
So we handcraft candles and diffusers, and the idea is to bring all those memories and culture into a jar and have people have those shared experiences at home.
Every small act makes a huge difference for a small business, and I know sometimes it is hard, but just take the decision to support local by supporting a small business, you're supporting a story.
So giving back and giving back to the community has been a huge part of Aurie Luxe, something that I was keen on from the start.
One of our earliest partnership was with SickKids Foundation, where a portion of our sales was went towards children's health, and more recently we've partnered up with Human Appeal Canada, where we support their Child Welfare Orphans Initiative.
I, when I started my business, I began attending a lot of networking events for small businesses, and over there I got introduce to TD's Women in Enterprise, and they would be there part of those conversations, telling small businesses what they should keep in mind as they're growing.
So, the account manager at TD helped me put together a business plan, to show me what steps I should be taking to help my business grow.
And honestly, that took off the stress from me,so I know there was a clear path, clear plan, and I could just focus on being me and being creative and just following my passion.
