Frequently asked questions
You're eligible for the New to Canada Banking Package if you are:
- A Permanent Resident, International Student or Temporary Resident for 5 years or less (with proof of status)
- Have never held a TD chequing account
- Age of majority in your province or territory of residence
1) Please bring one of the following pieces of residency identification:
- Permanent Resident Card
- Immigrant Visa and Record of Landing (IMM Form #1000)
- Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM Form #5292/5688) OR Temporary Work Permit (IMM Form #1442/1102) OR Study Permit (IMM Form #1208)
2) One of the following documents:
- A valid passport
- Canadian Driver’s License
- Canadian Government ID Card
International Students are also required to provide Proof of enrollment in a post-secondary program. The document provided must have been issued by the school and contain the following information: Student Name, Name of University or College, Program and current year of study.

To apply for the TD New to Canada Banking Package, book an appointment to open an account at your local TD branch.
If you currently live in China or India:
You can call us to help you set up an account. However, you will have 75 days from your initial set up to visit a TD branch to activate your TD bank account.
Make sure you have your Canadian Immigration Visa ready when you call.

Once you arrive in Canada, visit a TD branch to activate your new bank account.
If you live in any other country:
You must first arrive in Canada and then book an appointment to open an account at your local TD branch.
It depends on the bank and the type of accounts you have. For instance, transferring an RRSP or TFSA to a new financial institution might come with a fee. But here’s a tip: some banks will cover those transfer fees for you—so it’s worth asking! Closing an account with a $0 balance usually has no fee, but it’s always best to confirm with your bank beforehand.
