Get your Chosen or Preferred Name on your TD Credit Card

What’s in a name? Quite a lot. TD is committed to providing customers with a personalized experience. So, embrace your authentic self.

You can personalize1 your TD Credit Card with a first and/or last name that is different from your legal name.

Want to request that your TD Credit Card be replaced with a new card featuring your Chosen or Preferred Name? Just call 1-800-983-8472.

What is a Chosen or Preferred Name?

It is a name that you have chosen and prefer; it’s usually different from the name on your legal ID. We'll use the name of your choice to communicate with you except in those few instances when your legal name is required, for example, on statements and cheques.

Why does TD offer a Chosen or Preferred Name option?

Many individuals prefer to be called something other than what’s documented as their legal name. This is common across many of our customers. As TD is unquestionably committed to inclusive and tailored experiences, we believe individuals should be empowered to embrace their authentic selves.

  • Greater inclusivity

We’re proud to take this step toward TD Bank’s ongoing commitment to many diverse communities we serve.

  • Customize more

Personalize your TD customer profile too: update your name, pronouns, and gender identity using EasyWeb or the TD app.

Frequently asked questions

You can choose your preferred first name, last name, or both to be printed on your TD Credit Card.

This is one of those instances when your legal name is required. So please use your legal name when applying for a new TD Credit Card. But don’t worry; once your new Card is delivered, you can immediately request a replacement Card featuring your Chosen or Preferred Name by contacting TD Credit Cards at 1-800-983-8472.

If a merchant requests your ID and it doesn’t match the name on your TD Credit Card, you can explain that TD allows for Chosen or Preferred Names. You can also ask the merchant to call TD using the number on the back of your Card to verify your identity.

However, as per their own policies, merchants may still insist on legal ID verification, so we recommend carrying a government-issued ID with your legal name for such cases.

You can use either your Chosen or Preferred Name on your TD Credit Card or your legal name. However, please be aware that some retailers may require your legal name for shipping purposes.

If a Transaction is declined when using a Chosen Name, reattempt the Transaction with your legal name.

You’re free to choose a name that you’re comfortable with and one that reflects your identity and how you are commonly known by family, friends, your community, etc. For clarity, please follow these guidelines:

  • Name should include only alphabetic characters. (Numbers and special characters are not accepted.)
  • Avoid fictitious or inappropriate (i.e., discriminatory, profane, or derogatory) names.
  • A maximum of 21 characters (including spaces) can be printed on your TD Credit Card.

As per banking regulations, only your legal name will appear on all statement documents.

Adding a Chosen or Preferred Name to your TD Credit Card does not compromise the security of your Account in any way. TD’s robust security measures all remain in place.

Not at all. Reporting to the credit bureau is always in your legal name, so your credit score is never impacted by the name change on the Card.
